Taking A Stand On Carpeting

It is usually not a good idea to skimp on the quality of any major decorative element, but this is especially true of carpeting.  No other home furnishing offers the decorative impact, the sound-insulating qualities, the warmth and comfort that carpeting does.  For all these reasons, it makes the best sense to purchase the highest-quality carpeting that one can afford - even if it means waiting for finances to catch up to taste preferences.  Not only will high-quality carpeting look and perform better, it will last longer.  It will more than pay for itself past the point where lesser-quality goods will have had to be pulled up and replaced.  High-quality broadloom provides a far-reaching fashion statement upon which all other decorative elements can stand.  Begin your decorative strategy from the ground up with the choice of carpet color and texture.

From your floors to your windows and walls, [Carole Frances Interior Design] has the quality merchandise required to create the look you desire.  The latest fashion ideas for your home await your selection.  Let us help you coordinate floors, walls and windows to complement and enhance your personal style.

Hint:  Incorporate a custom-sculptured design within your carpet to further accent your decor!

Adapting Hardware

"The success of any window treatment hinges on the quality and design of a hidden element, the hardware.  The selection and positioning of traverse rods, poles, tie-backs and hooks all contribute to the look and movement of the final product.  Most window treatments benefit from symmetrical positioning.  Some require special treatment to cover irregular shapes.  All demand adherence to practicality in their use.  To address all these factors, it makes sense to work closely with the window-treatment specialist.  His knowledge of hardware may make a treatment adaptable, where others may have rejected it as unworkable.  It is often the hidden elements that point the way to success.

Window treatments are a specific area of decorating that is a specialization unto itself.  At [Carole Frances Interior Design], we are prepared to offer you the benefit of our experience in selecting window treatment ideas that are individually reflective of your taste.  From the simplest to the most difficult window, let us customize a look to meet your specific needs and desires.

Hint: The sliding glass or French door is one “window” element that often benefits from the window treatment knowledge of an expert.”   -On Interior Design

The Kindest Cut

"A cut-pile carpet consists of an array of individual yarns with sheared ends.  Different textures are created by applying different amounts of twist to the yarn, varying the yarn's size and luster, and applying different heat settings.  For instance, velvets and plushes owe their smooth, elegant appearance to a very little twist.  Because the evenly-cut yarn tips are densely packed, the carpet shows a smooth, lush surface.  Vacuuming and boosters will, however, show some shading as fibers are pushed in various directions.  Saxony carpets (or saxony plush) are less dense than plushes.  However, they gain durability by heat setting a tighter twist into each yarn.  They also show a slight surface texture, owing to distinguishable yarn tips.  Lastly, frieze (twist) carpets have tightly-twisted yarns that do not show footprints." -On Interior Design

Padding About The Carpet

"Carpet padding comes in a variety of types, weights, and thickness in order to cover a range of traffic conditions.  Sponge rubber, foam rubber, urethane foam, bonded urethane, and felted (a mixture of hair and jute) are the most common constructions.  In order to select the proper type, weight and thickness, it is important to carefully describe the type of traffic found in each area to be covered by carpeting.  It is popularly believed that a thick, soft padding gives the most desirable feel underfoot.  Soft padding, however, is not at all recommeneded for such high-traffic areas as stairs or family rooms.  It would only encourage excessive flexing, buckling and wrinkling which would promote undue wear in the backing yarns of the carpet.  For these areas, denser, firmer padding should be the choice.
Your newly decorated room should be a statement about you.  It should be a reflection of your tastes and life style." - On Interior Design

Cover Story

"Instead of slaving over a problem wall with spackle, sandpaper and paint, it may make more sense simply to cover it with fabric.  Not only does the use of fabric lend a touch of luxurious texture, but it insulates the wall against cold and sound, as well.  Gathering or shirring fabric takes several times as much fabric to cover the wall as would be needed for a flat application.  Lightweight fabrics drape better than heavy fabric when this method is used.  As for hardware, all that is needed are extendable rods and extension brackets for hanging the fabric.  A striking effect can be achieved by simply covering a single wall using this technique.
The decorating possibilities for your home are boundless.  Working within your framework of affordability, you can create an environment that expresses your individuality and lifestyle preferences.  Decorating your home need not be an expensive proposition.  Make choices wisely.  Tackle one room at a time making the end results a reflection of your needs and desires." - On Interior Design

An Island Retreat

"Even big kitchens have their problems.  For instance, the points of the work triangle (consisting of the sink, refrigerator and cooking range) may be spread too far out that they render the kitchen inefficient.  Generally speaking, this can be the case when these elements of the work triangle are separated from one another by eight feet or more.  This would create a triangle, the sides of which would add up to twenty-four feet.  Kitchen designers like to keep the sum of the sides of a work triangle under twenty-two feet.  However, a large kitchen's salvation may take the form of an island.  By locating the cooktop, for instance, in an island setting, the work triangle may be shortened.  The island also contributes to overall kichen efficiency by routing traffic around the work triangle.
When it comes to remodeling your kitchen, we feel strongly that a qualified designer should be assigned to visit your home and get a "feel" for the home and how the kitchen relates to it.  This is where our experience really pays off for you.  [Carole Frances Interior Design] can assist you [in] mak[ing] that dream kitchen a reality." -On Interior Design

Wicker Ways

"Wicker is something that is woven mostly from rattan.  This includes cane, pole, reed, and peel.  The popularity of wicker furniture has fluctuated throughout the history of home furnishing.  But, it was never so fashionable as it was in Victorian times.  People were so enamored of wicker that they put it in virtually every room of the house.  Today, things have come full circle to the point where people are embracing wicker furnishings to the same extent.  The reasons for this are the same as they were years ago.  Wicker is natural, handmade, and comfortable.  It is new and old at the same time.  It is rustic, yet exotic.  Although it may take the simplest or most elaborate forms to reflect the taste of the times, it always maintains an integrity of its own.
Your home is a reflection of your individual tastes.  At [Carole Frances Interior Design], we offer you the personalized service and attention that you require in creating and expressing your own unique individuality.  The most difficult task is in staying within your budget limitations.  We can help you achieve the quality look you desire at prices you can afford.  Look to us for the wall and window treatments that are individualistically reflective of your tastes." -On Interior Design

Defining Big

"Believe it or not, remodeling a large kitchen area is often more difficult than altering a smaller space.  The problem often lies with the fact that there are fewer limitations, if any, imposed by the space.  The homeowner is virtually free to do as she wishes and has difficulty in defining her needs.  This is where a rational plan becomes important.  The homeowner must focus on her own particular habits.  The kitchen, its work areas and storage spaces, will begin to take shape around the cook's methods and preferences.  Entertaining trends must also be analyzed.  Other family members' needs must be taken into account.  Before long, the family's lifestyle gives shape to a space which possesses no prior definitions of its own.
If you are contemplating an investment in a new kitchen, we can help you to coordinate this room with the other rooms in your home to help you achieve total harmony and balance throughout.  Our criteria for purchasing for our clients is that it has to be classic design, quality merchandise and the unusual something that you won't find just anywhere.  We are most conscious of our reputation and our clients demands." -On Interior Design

Multiple Choice

"Most people approach a bare window with a single window treatment in mind.  However, two window treatments on the same window often double the pleasure and enjoyment that a person can derive from a window.  Generally speaking, there are no rules to follow in the use of multiple window treatments.  Very often, it is the unique quality of the window, or its placement, that suggests how it should be treated.  For instance, look at a window that calls for both privacy and light control.  It requires either wide-blade wood shutters or micro blinds to regulate incoming light.  At the same time, overlying draperies of semi-opaque fabric will offer privacy regardless of how much light is allowed in.  In tandem, the treatments offer a look that is greater than the sum of their parts.
Here at [Carole Frances Interior Design], we have access to the finest window, wall, [and] floor treatments.  Your interior design should fulfill both the practical requirements of a home as well as the aesthetic.  We can advise you on the creation of an elegant and harmonious atmosphere for your home." -On Interior Design

Custom Tile Design

"Selecting ceramic tile for the kitchen floor not only allows the homeowner to enjoy a premium floor covering, but the floor can be customized as well.  Most people take the step from a solid-color floor to a custom-designed one by creating a border.  Generally, the border has an accent color and outlines the physical layout of the base cabinets.  However, a more adventurous look at tile design reveals that there is no limit to the pattern of tile placement.  It can take a symmetrical geometric form, or it can assume a zig-zagging step pattern.  Truly contemporary kitchens can accept post-modern design spiked with multi-colored audacity.  The place to start any tile design is on graph paper where each block can represent a single tile.
In all the environments we create, [Carole Frances Interior Design] is concerned with the needs and the fulfillment of the needs of our clients.  We design wih a view to maximum space efficiency as well as creating the environment you are seeking.  You can rely upon us to offer you complete interior design service.  Our business is interpreting your design needs with imagination and individuality.
HINT:  Laying tiles diagonally to the walls gives an illusion of space to narrow floors." -On Interior Design

Added Attraction

"Every room has a focal point!  That which the eye goes to first when a person enters the room.  For example, it can be a charming fireplace, a large window with a gorgeous view, maybe a built-in wall unit.
Let's take a walk into your living room.  What is it that greets your eyes first?
Does it make a statement in setting the theme for your room or does your T.V. win by default?
Is that large window "dressed" with an interesting treatent?  Could that fireplace be updated with a beautiful mantle or faced with mirrors?  Maybe an artful arrangement of pictures should replace that insecure one above the sofa.
And, of course, you can establish more than one focal point in a room; just be sure one of them is major and the others play minor roles.
In the decorating of your home, you want to create a look of harmony throughout.  Careful attenton must be made not to call attention to any one particular area of the room.  Here at [Carole Frances Interior Design], we have access to the finest window, wall and floor treatments.  Your interior design should fulfill both the practical requirements of a home as well as the aesthetic.  We can advise you on the creation of an elegant and harmonious atmosphere for both the office and home." - On Interior Design

Veneer

"The phrase "case pieces" refers to furniture that is made entirely of wood.  Quality should be evident to the eye and to the touch.  The surface should be smooth.  The color should be well-matched across all doors and drawers.  If the piece is veneered, the match can be exact, something that is not always possible with solid wood.  This is only one of the beauties of veneering.  This method of furniture construction has long been mistaken as inferior.  It definitely is not.  A veneered piece consists of up to five layers of wood that have been permanently bonded.  The top layer is beautifully grained and finished.  Together, the layers are actually stronger than solid wood, which is subject to atmospheric conditions.  More than 90 percent of furniture made today is veneer.
Furniture is merely one aspect of a room's dimension.  It takes on character when placed in its setting.  All facets of a room must come together like a unique composition.  Walls, windows, floor furnishings and accessories all play a part in setting the flavor and tone of a room.  Like pieces of a puzzle, each must fit perfectly before the parts become a whole."  -On Interior Design

Special Steps on Oriental Rugs

"Because Oriental rugs are a cross between art objects and floor coverings, they require some special care.  To begin with, a non-electric sweeper broom should be used to lift surface dust off these special rugs.  Vacuum cleaners are more likely to stress and tear rub fibers.  To blot up the occasional spill, resort to a cotton cloth saturated with club soda.  Strong solvents may compromise the color quality of the handmade rugs.  Professional cleaning is necessary on a regular basis to assure complete removal of embedded dirt.  To test for the need for a cleaning, wipe a damp white cloth across a rug that has just been swept.  A professional cleaning is called for if the cloth shows a residue of gray.  Those rugs in city settings require cleaning about every two years.  Those in the country can wait four years between cleanings.
Beautiful rooms aren't made; they are created. At [Carole Frances Interior Design], we have the professional expertise that enables us to offer you any assistance you might require in your decorating endeavors.  We have the capability to totally coordinate a single room or an entire home.  Look to us for your window, wall and floor treatments.  Our personalized attention and individualized service will assist you in coordinating every aspect of your room.
HINT: Rotate an Oriental rug 180 degrees each year to reduce the affects of fading." -On Interior Design

The Screening Process

"With open floor plans so prevalent in today's interior residential design, the folding panel screen is making a comeback.  Screens originally were used to break drafts in the 1500's.  By the 1600's and 1700's, screens became as decorative as they were practical.  Imported Oriental lacquered panels were very popular.  At the height of the Victorian era, screens were to be found everywhere in every imaginable decorative form.  Today, folding screens are used to conceal heating pipes, camouflage storage space, serve as a backup element for sofas and beds, and divide space in multi-purpose rooms.  By covering them with wall paper and borders, they can serve as reinforcement for decorating scheme.  Covered in fabric, they can lend a plush tactile sense to a furniture grouping.  Decorative screens can be an unusual answer to vexing decorating problems.
If you are planning to redecorate your home, we invite prospective clients to come in and meet personally with our design staff.  We design our interiors to suit your needs and lifestyle.  To bring continuity and harmoney to your kitchen's decor, the assistance of an interior designer should be employed.  We can help coordinate the theme throughout the house."   -On Interior Design

Separate But Equal

"Consider using wall treatments to define and visually separate different areas of a home.  For example, adjacent living and dining areas usually can be separated by giving each area a slightly different wall treatment.  Mixing colors and patterns can be tricky.  However, today's new wall covering and fabric collections allow mixing without clashing.  These collections offer a controlled range of choices.  On the other hand, if there are any cut-up spaces, this coordinated approach can be used to add up-to-date crispness to an older home.  Use of a modern painted graphic or grid pattern covering will accomplish the task.  Light colors and unbroken expanses of small patterns make space look larger.
Our designers have the expertise, knowledge, and concern to help advise you to accomplish your decorating needs."  -On Interior Design

Home Is Where The Value Is

"For most Americans, the purchase of the single-family house is the largest expenditure they will ever make.  Second place goes to the furnishings that contribute to make the house a "home."  It is only fitting that the home and its furnishings place ahead of the third-place finisher, the automobile.  While the vast majority of cars on the road only remain serviceable for about four or five years, many home furnishings can be considered appreciating assets.  The home itself and any carefully-selected, quality pieces of furniture may well outlive their owners.  They may also rise in value if their style is considered to be worthy and their workmanship is high-grade.  Such pieces may be considered as investments.  Even those that eventually succumb to wear will provide use that generally outstrips their original cost.
Hint: It generally pays to save up for one quality piece of furniture than to go for several low-quality pieces.
For whatever your reason for redecorating, we can assist you.  There is no substitute for professional decorating.  At [Carole Frances Interior Design], we provide you with a complete design service.  We like to spend time with our clients, get to know the personality that lives in their home since it is their own statement of their home that we want to honestly reflect.  Our clients receive knowledge, experience, service and integrity.  We offer you the quality and materials necessary in the creation of a unique and distinctive environment.  From walls and windows to your floors, we have [access to] the quality products and accessories to create a truly unique home interior."  -On Interior Design

The Right Touch

"Accessories.  The small part of the total room design that makes a big difference!  Think about the accessories you are wearing today.  It's a personal matter you say?  Exactly right.  And that's what home accessories are, too.  Some are selected for style or to compliment other things in the room.  Some are gifts or items collected for sentimental value.  "Personal" however, does not mean that anything goes.  Here are some guidelines that will assist you.
Begin by selecting those things necessary to make the room functional.  This includes the more obvious like lamps, clocks, picture frames, vases, candle holders, etc.
The most basic consideration in selecting an accessory is its relationship to the environment.  Once you make your selections, the next concern is to display them to the fullest advantage.
Whenever you highlight an individual item - a sculputure, an oil painting, a cloisonne vase - give it the position it deserves.  Let it be the focal point without crowding with other elements.  Use special lighting for special emphasis.  Group smaller accessories for added impact but; vary the sizes, colors, and textures for visual interest.
Remember, well-chosen accessories not only enhance a room but are a clear reflection of you!" -On Interior Design

Dollar For Dollar

"Kitchen improvements are the best investments that homeowners can make.  While the amount of return on investment varies according to location and cost, the average kitchen remodel yields half again its orginal cost at resale time.  No wonder home sellers are remodeling their worn and outmoded kitchens.  A remodeled and upgraded kitchen not only helps sell a home, it sells it for more.
Achieving balance and harmony in the total look of your room creates interest and appeal in your room's decor.  When redecorating your kitchen or bath, you want to coordinate these rooms to complement the rest of your house keeping a feeling of unity and harmony flowing throughout your home." - On Interior Design

Design Tip

"Consider each area in the home as a small stage, then design it accordingly."

A Review

A review from one of our clients:

"We completed a challenging floor plan in Summer 2011 for our great room (living room) through [Carole Frances Interior Design] and feel like the result looks straight out of a high-end design catalogue. They came up with a really creative layout that fully optimized the floor plan, our hosting style, and general lifestyle parameters. I have scoured every furniture and design store over the years, and have not seen anywhere the items that they purchased for our project. I am no longer envious when I turn on HGTV!

I was nervous about hiring designers due to the perception of high costs. I interviewed several designers, and I felt Carole's business model would be the best fit for our needs. Also, their affiliated vendors are not available to retail consumers; they're available only to the design industry. And best of all, the total cost was comparable to a Macy's but at a high-end, exclusive quality and look.

To describe what they did for our room, "transformation" is an understatement! They work really well together, have experience in every design style across a range of budgets, and lack any pretension."  -Jolly  (7/18/2011)
