Special Steps on Oriental Rugs

"Because Oriental rugs are a cross between art objects and floor coverings, they require some special care.  To begin with, a non-electric sweeper broom should be used to lift surface dust off these special rugs.  Vacuum cleaners are more likely to stress and tear rub fibers.  To blot up the occasional spill, resort to a cotton cloth saturated with club soda.  Strong solvents may compromise the color quality of the handmade rugs.  Professional cleaning is necessary on a regular basis to assure complete removal of embedded dirt.  To test for the need for a cleaning, wipe a damp white cloth across a rug that has just been swept.  A professional cleaning is called for if the cloth shows a residue of gray.  Those rugs in city settings require cleaning about every two years.  Those in the country can wait four years between cleanings.
