"A cut-pile carpet consists of an array of individual yarns with
sheared ends. Different textures are created by applying different
amounts of twist to the yarn, varying the yarn's size and luster, and
applying different heat settings. For instance, velvets and plushes owe
their smooth, elegant appearance to a very little twist. Because the
evenly-cut yarn tips are densely packed, the carpet shows a smooth, lush
surface. Vacuuming and boosters will, however, show some shading as
fibers are pushed in various directions. Saxony carpets (or saxony
plush) are less dense than plushes. However, they gain durability by
heat setting a tighter twist into each yarn. They also show a slight
surface texture, owing to distinguishable yarn tips. Lastly, frieze
(twist) carpets have tightly-twisted yarns that do not show footprints."
